Artist Statement

I see my art as psychological self-portraiture.  When I sit down to create, my goal is to convey a sense of who I am internally at that moment.  I rely heavily on automatic drawing and find that preconceived ideas serve to restrict my creativity rather than enhance it. I am inspired by the honesty of children’s art.

I feel that when a child draws he is not inhibited by interpersonal peer pressure.  What is displayed is either a feeling or a branch of thought.  It is not always clear to me what my art means.  It feels similar trying to explain a vivid dream from the night before.  I relate to the aspects of exaggeration that allow confidence in aspects such as my overtly large Adam’s apple.

I invite the peculiar and believe it happens best if my mind is inadvertent and flushed.  It is important to me that my hallucinant imagery is developed in a natural state of mind and not derived from any sort of substance abuse.  I feel that this makes the work directly communicate to my upbringing, natural intuition, habits, and instinct.
